The Complete Guide: How to Get to Hawaii with Miles

June 11, 2014 by Kevin

Hawaii is one of my favorite places to visit, and I would recommend anyone who has never visited to make it a priority honeymoon destination.

Hawaii has a mystique that makes it seem very exotic – even though you aren’t really leaving the country to get there. Since I live in Florida, it is farther away than Europe, and much farther than anywhere in the Caribbean. As a result, it has even more of a special place in my mind, since the distance usually makes it that much harder to get there.

Fortunately, Hawaii is one of the easier destinations to travel to with points, and you can even get all the miles you need with just a single card sign-up bonus!

What Are Stopovers and Open Jaws?

June 11, 2014 by Kevin

When discussing award flights, the subject of ‘stopovers’ and ‘open jaws’ inevitably comes up.

For most of you who are new to the miles and points scene, these terms are a little confusing. Usually, when you book a flight, you are traveling from one place to another, and then back – A to B and back to A. So all of this talk of crazy routings doesn’t seem to make much sense.

So what does it mean to get an award with a stopover or an open jaw, and how can you use them to your advantage?

Hacking Your Honeymoon – A Guide To Rewards Strategy For Your Honeymoon (really long post)

May 29, 2014 by Kevin

There is a lot that goes into planning your honeymoon, especially if you want to plan your own getaway using miles and points. But if you are willing to learn a little bit of the tricks of the trade, and do some investigation (maybe even less than figuring out which all-inclusive in the Caribbean is the best) – you can really get some great value and luxury for your honeymoon.

In this post (it’s really long, but trust me, it’s worth it) I will go through a semi-detailed process for figuring out a strategy for maximizing your honeymoon – getting the luxurious getaway of your dreams where you can travel in style and comfort, and relax with your true love wherever you want.

Great Deal: Fly First Class to Japan, Australia, New Zealand For The Price of Coach

May 6, 2014 by Kevin

You can have First Class luxiry

You can have First Class luxury – for the cost of coach! (clockwise, from top right: Qantas first class, Cathay Pacific first class, JAL first class, British Airways first class)

One of the best things about the points game is how it allows you to enjoy travel experiences you otherwise would not be able to enjoy.

Sometimes, that is an incredible destination you might not be able to visit without points. Sometimes, it’s a luxury hotel that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Sometimes, it is experiencing a level of service and comfort that you would otherwise miss out on.

When my fiancée Sabrina and I went to Seattle last year for our Alaskan cruise, we were able to take advantage of a deal that allowed us to fly first class for the same price as we would have paid to fly coach.

We got to enjoy nice comfy seats for the long flight from Florida to Washington, easier check-in at the airport, free food and drinks (I certainly enjoyed some Alaskan brews on the trip!) – even waiting in the airport for our flight home was easier thanks to lounge access where we had wifi, more snacks and drinks, and comfortable couches to relax in.

We still got to the same place, but we were able to begin and end our trip in a more relaxed state than we would have scrunched in coach for the 6.5-hour flight (I’m 6’2″, so airplane seats generally aren’t super comfortable for me!). It was something that made the trip extra special for us.

Flying first class is a special experience, and when the opportunity comes up to experience it at effectively no cost – it’s a no-brainer!

Right now there is a combination of things going on that are allowing basically that – the opportunity to fly first class around the world for the same price as coach!

But this probably won’t last long, so you better hurry! [Read more…]
